Samsung SV8004H 80GB HDD Review
Samsung SV8004H 80GB HDD Review - PCSTATS
The hard drive we are looking at today is the flagship model from Samsung, a name you generally don't associate with hard drives in the first place.

Drive Performance Benchmarks:

Access Time (ms)
HDTach 99     Samsung SV8004H      Maxtor 5T060H6      Samsung SV6004H
Winbench 99 14.5 ms 17.4 ms 14.4 ms
HDTach 1.61 14.6 ms 17.6 ms 14.5 ms

The SpinPoint SV8004H compared closely to the SV6004H, but remained a fair distance behind the Quantum Fireball Plus. The main difference to here to take note of is the 5400RPM vs. 7200PM difference between the Samsung and Quantum drives. The drive that spins faster is obviously going to have an advantage in access times over the 5400RPM SV8004H Samsung drive.

HDTach 2.61:

Hard drive Tach 2.61 is standard for benchmarking drives and provides a wealth of data on the peculiarities of each drive tested. The software tests five major points; access time, burst speed, read speed and percent CPU utilization.

CPU Utilization: 1.47% 1.2% 1.72%

WinBench 99 points out some interesting performance variances between the 80GB Samsung and the 60GB Maxtor in particular. While the Maxtor proves superior in terms of percent CPU utilization, the Samsung SV8004H boasts better disk access times.

We didn't have anyway of accurately measuring the temperature or noise output of the SpinPoint SV8004H, or comparison drives, but what we can say is that temperatures remained fairly cool (about 40 degrees Celsius), and noise was not noticeable Finally, it's worth noting that the SpinPoint has a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of only about $2.02 per GB, while comparatively speaking the 60GB Maxtor is $2.33, and the 60GB Samsung is $1.93. Based on these average retail figures (hint: you should be able to find even better prices) the SpinPoint SV8004H offers very good value for the dollar with very little noise generation. In the end I would have to say we were surprised by the results of the tests on the 80GB Samsung drive, and the low price point it is selling for. While it may not be the fastest drive out there, it does offer a good set of features which can be more desireable in some situations (home office, where cost and noise are an issue) then raw performance.
