The Camera: Perspectives

Camera Controls.

The rear of the 6900Z, like many digital cameras is central to the efficient operation of the unit. The two most important components are of course the dual viewfinders. Where many digital cameras either have a single LCD viewfinder, and an optical eyepiece, the 6900Z has both, and both are LCD-based. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, lets take a closer look at the FinePix 6900Z.

Once the 6900Z has be powered on, the lens expands 31mm out to its full operating size. The flash can be left closed, or released via a small button on the side of the camera to bring it into active duty. The focusing ring on the lens can be used if the camera is set to manual focus. The lens is a Fujinon 6X optical zoom, 1:2.8-3.1, f= 7.8-46.8mm.

The rear of the camera is well laid out, but with a few too many buttons in my opinion. The large 2" TFT LCD viewfinder is protected from damage by a plastic screen. The camera can be operated by the 2" viewfinder or the smaller 0.55" EVF similar to that of more traditional SLR's. The eyecup is rubberized for comfortable use.

The round control pad enables the user to navigate through on-screen menus and to zoom in or pan out. The focus check button is particularly useful as it brings up a zoomed-in area on the viewfinder to help the user when manually focusing.

On profile the 6900Z does look very much like an SLR. The camera comes standard with a neck strap that can be attached to the lanyard strap mounts. The flap for the SmartMedia slot will shut down the camera if opened when the unit is on.

The lens is housed in a carbon-black aluminum shell (the camera body is magnesium). Shown are the cover for the USB, power and video-out connectors, the zoom button, focus control selector and focusing ring. During our use we didn't find much use for the info, white balance or exposure compensation buttons. The camera will zoom up to 6X optically and then can zoom a further 4.43X digitally.

The 6900Z accepts on 3.7V 1300mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. When connected to the travel charger the camera recharges the battery internally. The battery takes about 5 hours to fully charge in the camera, and will last approximately 100 shots.

Photographers not satisfied with the built-in flash can use the hot-shoe to add an external flash assembly to the 6900Z. The handgrip makes holding the camera with one hand quite easy, and the trigger button was easily accessed. The mode dial has the following settings; Auto, Scene Position Mode, Programmed Shooting Mode, Shutter-priority Mode, Aperture-priority Mode, Manual Mode, Movie mode and settings configuration.

Behind the shutter release are controls for the flash and for macro photography, as well as continuous shooting, and self timing. Surrounding the power switch is the mode switch which determines if the camera will play-back stored images or shoot photos.
