Looking Closer at the Components

The layout of the IEEE1394 adapter card is typical of the industry. At least one of the ports is placed on the inside of the board to allow for future use with internal FireWire capable devices. At this point I'm unaware of any devices designed for the inside of the computer which utilize the IEEE1394 standard, but the prospect of RAID-type arrays of storage devices with 400Mbit/s through-put is tantalizing none the less.

Super 1394

The Super1394 software adds on a bit of utilitarian video editing capability that would form a good place to jump off from for anyone just beginning to enter the world of digital video. We were not able to test out the functionality of the software for lack of FireWire enabled digital video camera. Basically though, Super1394 enables video and still frame capture, playback and basic digital video editing.

The requirements for the program to run properly are somewhat steep. Apart from running on Win98SE or later (this is the case with all IEEE1394 devices), it requires min 350Mhz CPU, 64Mb RAM, and a 1GB hard drive.

Let's take a look at some benchmarks!
