AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 125W Processor Review
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 125W Processor Review - PCSTATS
In most other respects the quad core 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 125W revision remains the same. The architecture is "Deneb", the socket is AM3 and the CPU still features 6MB of shared L3 and 512KB of L2 cache for each of the four cores.

Core-by-Core System Power Draw

To determine how much power multi-core processors draw, PCSTATS will be measuring total power consumption what the CPU is in idle and several CPU-stressed states. To get an accurate measurement, it's necessary to disable power saving and CPU clock speed throttling technologies like Cool 'n' Quiet, EIST (speedstep) and hardware C1E power states.

To simulate single-core load a program called Stress Prime (SP2004) is used. PCSTATS set about stressing each processor from one to all cores. The SP2004 program is multi-threaded, allowing individual CPU cores to be stressed by each instance of the program. Total system power consumption was read with the Extech Power Analyzer Datalogger (model 380803). The Extech Power Analyzer is located between the main 120AC supply and the PC's power supply. Given that motherboards vary across these test systems this is not a "true" measure of CPU power draw alone, but rather a measurement of the total computer system power draw, which we can compare for each specific platforms between the CPU idle and CPU stressed states.

Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition - Now just 125W!

AMD's original Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition had a TDP of 140W, which translated into some outright scary power consumption numbers under load. AMD has hauled its flagship processor back into the lab, and with a bit of tinkering has managed to get its overall power draw down to 125W, saving countless carbon footprints in the midst. It's time to see how much real-world effect these changes have made.

While there's a definite improvement in the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (125W)'s idle power draw performance, it's still pretty close to the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 140W total system power draw measurement. Intel's main rival is the Core i5 750 processor, that PC system idles at a reasonable 124W.

Under load, we finally get to see the reduced TDP of the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (125W) in action. Overall power consumption has dropped from 264W to a more reasonable 243W, but on balance that's still a lot of electricity consumption! The revised Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 125W is second only to Intel's Pentium D 940 when it comes to power draw under load, and the Pentium D 940 was able to double as a space heater in its spare time. When compared to the Core i5 750's 169W total system power draw, even the 125W TDP Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition still has a long ways to go.

Over all both the old and new Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processors are still pushing total system power consumption towards the 250W region. Hopefully AMD can get on the 32nm wagon quickly enough that its future processors will make it under 100W TDP.

Overclocking is up next, and you won't want to miss these overclocking results...
