Benchmarks and other Aspects

We ran into a big hitch when we tried to overclock the videocard. Using PowerStrip version 3.20 we were unable to manipulate the GPU or memory frequency. The program identified the videocard properly at the appropriate speeds (250 MHz GPU, 166 MHz memory) but maxing out the sliders didn't bring any performance gain. This isn't a big concern since the Crucial Radeon 8500LE is not intended for the relatively small overclocker market.

3DMark2000 is still a popular benchmarks for evaluating 3D performance even though it is getting a bit dated. 3DMark2000 continues to provide benchmark results that gauge DirectX7 performance and hardware transformation and lighting that older games still use. Version 1.1 ensures more reliable functionality with hardware and operating systems that were released after the launch of 3DMark2000 in December 1999.

In general, ATI card's have never faired well in 16 bit colour even dating as far back as the Rage 128! Here the Albatron MX440 cleanly beats the Crucial Radeon 8500LE.

By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, it continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001SE has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics.

Here the Crucial Radeon 8500LE is able to score higher then the MX440 mainly due to the fact that the 8500LE is a DirectX 8 videocard while the MX440 is only DX 7 compatible.
