Vantec ION 400W VAN-400B Power Supply
Vantec ION 400W VAN-400B Power Supply - PCSTATS
With the ION, Vantec stripped away the fancy aluminum housing, and WTX compatibility. Viola, the economically priced 400W ION VAN-400B was born!

More details

The ION VAN-400B has two 80mm thermally controlled fans inside it which also can be controlled via a fan controller on the back of the power supply.

In the past, we've found that after a long period of time the fan can stall if kept to the quietest fan speed setting. On the Vantec Stealth 470W PSU, this only became apparent after about 10 months of use. I would recommend keeping the fan speed set to medium, or full.

On the rear of the PSU the ION features the usual power socket, as well as an additional power outlet. To the left sits the 115/230V selector (make sure it is set to the right position before turning on the PSU), and to the right the fan speed controller.

While the ION VAN-400B does not have Serial ATA power connectors pre-wired, Vantec do include two molex to Serial ATA adapters so it can be used with a set of SATA hard drives. Power supplies don't really need to come with a user manuals as they're pretty straightforward to install and use, but Vantec include one regardless.

When we take a closer look at the power supply we see that guts of the the ION VAN-400B are manufactured by Topower.

Once we're inside we can see that the two 80m fans are detachable, that's great news for those of you who have dusty rooms. When the fan dies, you can replace them.

And no, the Vantec ION VAN-400B does not have any internal potentiometers which would allow a user to adjust line voltages. We're not surprised though as this power supply is intended for the mainstream market.

Please keep in mind, if you open up a power supply your warranty goes the way of the dodo. There are components inside which are hazardous, and can give you a serious electric shock!

Power Supply Rated Voltages/Amps/Watts:

Vantec state the maximum sustained current rating instead of peak values on the side of the ION. This is a little more useful than stating the peak values I think, and we would be pleased to see this trend continue with other manufacturers.

The +3.3V rail can deliver 26 amps, the +5V rail 40 amps, and the most important +12V rail delivers 16 amps. The 12V rail alone can provide 192W of power which should be enough for even today's most powerful processors. At peak loads the Vantec ION VAN-400B can deliver 500W of power (+/-6% for 60 seconds). Up next, we run some tests on the Vantec ION...
