NEC MATE MA90W/F Crusoe Desktop Computer
The big draw of the new
NEC MA90W/F "Mate" series desktop computer is not that is runs on
a 900MHz TM5800 Crusoe processor, or that it is an ultra low footprint desktop computer
- the real draw of this system is just how quiet
it is.
The NEC MA90W/F produces just 20 dB of noise! To
put that in perspective, the eloquent Japanese press release mentions that this
is about as "noisy" as leaves rustling in a tree. The truly quiet NEC MA90W/F
has no CPU fan, no power supply fan, and uses a hard drive with low-noise fluid
bearings.
The NEC MA90W/F is
available in Japan (only) for about $1970USD.
The system features the 900MHz Crusoe processor,
128MB of SDRAM, ATI Mobility Radeon graphics, a 15" TFT LCD display, 20GB hard
drive (with Mirror RAID and StandbyDisk/StandbyDisk Solo), 24X CDROM, and
Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. Onboard 10/100 LAN and a full size
keyboard round out the list of features.
StandbyDisk/StandbyDisk Solo make use of two hard drives which add redundancy in case of a
virus infection affecting the operating system. In such situation it is possible for
StandbyDisk to reconstruct the main drive to a point where it was last
backed up. StandbyDisk Solo allows the computer to duplicate the C drive with
just one hard drive installed in the machine. The Mate consumes just 31Watts.
